Executive Summary
Smiths Medical’s detection and screening unit has taken its first steps to break into the healthcare market by developing a rapid diagnostic system for infectious diseases. Smiths Detection, said to be a global leader in developing threat detection and screening technologies for military, transportation, homeland security and resilience applications, believes the clinical diagnostic version of its Bio-Seeq system will provide easy-to-use lab or point-of-care tests for diseases such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile. London, UK-based firm Smiths said that the test would not require manual sample preparation and a variety of solid and liquid samples can be used. The firm expects trials of clinical diagnostic system to begin in early 2009 and is currently seeking partners to co-develop a range of tests to run on the system. The underlying technology for Bio-Seeq is also being applied in animal health.
