A three-dimensional soft-tissue marker for use during breast cancer surgery is now in clinical use and has been shown to shorten the number of radiation treatments and spare dosing of normal tissue. The spiral BioZorb tissue marker from start-up Focal Therapeutics Inc. is used primarily during lumpectomy procedures and is placed following removal of the tumor and prior to radiation therapy.
