House approves 19-month physician fee extension, but Senate leaves town

This article was originally published in The Gray Sheet

Executive Summary

The House voted May 28 to prevent a June 1 21% cut in Medicare physician fees and extend current fee levels for 19 months on a 245 to 171 vote, as part of a broader bill. But the Senate adjourned for a one-week Memorial Day recess on May 27 without approving the measure. The Senate is expected to consider an extension to physician fees after it returns to work on June 7. CMS told its contractors May 27 to hold off on processing Medicare physician claims for the first 10 business days in June
