CDC calls for fit-tested N95 respirators to counter spread of H1N1

This article was originally published in The Gray Sheet

Executive Summary

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issues new personal protective equipment recommendations advising workers in close contact with H1N1 influenza cases to wear fit-tested, N95 respirators to avoid spreading the virus. Previous CDC infection control guidance for seasonal influenza advised use of surgical masks. The agency's more conservative approach for H1N1 is in line with a Sept. 3 Institute of Medicine report saying that it is still not known if the H1N1 virus spreads through personal contact, droplet spray or airborne transmission. At an August IoM meeting, researchers shared findings on the effectiveness of personal protective equipment ("1The Gray Sheet" Aug. 24, 2009)

N95 respirators for H1N1 protection

CDC issued the call for fit-tested N95 respirators earlier this month as a precaution, because it is still unknown if the H1N1 virus spreads through personal contact, droplet spray or airborne transmission ("1The Gray Sheet" Sept. 14, 2009)
