Executive Summary

Actor Tom Cruise is engaging in risky business by purchasing and operating a fetal ultrasound machine without a license or medical training, according to the American College of Radiology. The ACR worries about the collateral impact should others decide to follow in the footsteps of the maverick actor and his fiancée, Katie Holmes. According to the ACR, unlicensed "physicians" operating non-prescribed radiology equipment create a dangerous cocktail because ultrasound could damage infant tissue when overused. Though Cruise is possibly in violation of federal law, ACR does not plan to take action. The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography also raised concerns in a Dec. 1 release, but calls Cruise's plans to donate the machine to a hospital following the baby's birth "laudable"...
