Executive Summary
Proposed rule published July 5 in the Federal Register allows state governors, following consultation with their boards of medicine and nursing, to exempt certified registered nurse anesthetists from physician supervision during administration of anesthesia. HHS will seek comments on a prospective study to assess the impact of state-certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) practices as part of an HHS proposed rule to re-evaluate whether federal requirements for CRNA supervision should be suspended, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson announces May 17. Thompson also announced another delay of a Clinton Administration regulation that left to the states determination of which licensed practitioners are allowed to administer anesthesia.
