National Institute of General Medical Sciences and NIH Deputy Director Ruth Kirschstein, MD, will serve as acting director of the National Institutes of Health following the departure of Harold Varmus, MD, in January. Kirschstein previously served as interim NIH director in 1993, when Bernadine Healy stepped down from the nation's top biomedical research post.
