Computer Motion: Medical robotics firm plans to begin shipping its Aesop 3000 following 510(k) clearance Dec. 29 for the robotic voice controlled endoscopic positioning system. The device incorporates design modifications to the Aesop 2000, including an additional joint mechanism, that facilitate its use in minimally invasive cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery procedures. Clinical studies evaluating use of the device in mitral heart valve replacement and internal mammary harvesting surgeries were completed in November. The Goleta, California firm began marketing the Aesop 2000 in October 1996 for use in minimally invasive surgical procedures.
