Medtronic: Firm's Kappa 700 "totally automatic" pacing system is slated to enter clinical trials in Europe early this fall for market release in early calendar 1998, Chief Financial Officer Robert Ryan said at a June 17 session of the Piper Jaffray conference in Minneapolis. The first device in the Kappa series next-generation pacer line, the Kappa 400, was introduced in Europe in January and a U.S. launch is expected in Medtronic's second fiscal quarter, Ryan noted ("The Gray Sheet" March 31, p. 7). The device uses an advanced integrated sensing system to adjust heart rate therapy settings to match patient activity patterns without requiring a visit to the hospital or clinic. The 700, which is intended to replace the firm's Thera-i series of pacemakers, will provide broader diagnostic capabilities than the 400 line, and automatically discriminate physiologic readings pertinent to the patient's condition, the company says. U.S. release of the Kappa 700 series, which will offer both dual- and single-chamber versions as well as rate-responsive and non-rate-responsive models, is slated for late summer 1998...
