INVESTIGATIONAL DEVICE MEDICARE PAYMENT REGS should be proposed by HCFA concurrently with passage of legislation on the issue, incoming Physician Payment Review Commissioner Gail Wilensky urged June 14 at a PPRC meeting in Washington, D.C. Expressing concern that Health Care Financing Administration rulemaking delays could hold up changes to current policy even after legislation is passed, Wilensky said that early publication of the regs could "speed implementation" of a "relatively minor modification" to Medicare payment policy to allow for coverage of investigational devices.
