This article was originally published in The Gray Sheet

Executive Summary

Health Care Financing Administration proposes to set special payment limits for standard home blood glucose monitors in a Jan. 6 Federal Register notice. HCFA says that current fee schedule amounts for the monitors "are grossly excessive and not inherently reasonable." The agency is proposing that payment be equal to either 80% of the lesser of the actual charge of the device or a special payment limit of $57 for the continental U.S. and $65 for Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands
